Options for Student Academic Support

Academic Coaching

The Academic Learning Center (ALC) staff meets individually with students who would like guidance on study skills, note-taking, test preparation, and time management. Coaching is available to all students (undergraduate and graduate students) and is free of charge. A student may email learning@ku.edu to make an appointment or schedule an academic coaching online.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides peer facilitated study sessions outside of the classroom. Students may attend one or more SI sessions and/or office hours during the week. SI Sessions offer an opportunity for the student to discuss the material, gain study tips, and ask questions. For more information, students may see their instructor or visit the SI website for more information.

Tutoring Services

The Academic Learning Center offers students two options for course-specific tutoring. First, is our small group, peer led tutoring. Tutor groups are KU course specific. Tutor groups are capped at five students per group. Each group meets twice per week all semester long once the group is formed up through Stop Week.

We also offer individual (one-to-one) tutoring sessions with a trained tutor who will help you understand concepts or principles, underlying questions or problems covered in the course for which you are seeing assistance. Individual Tutoring offers students a flexible option if they do not want to make a semester long commitment. Please see our individual tutoring page for more information.

All ALC tutors are formally trained and come recommended by at least two KU faculty/instructors.

If your student would like to become a tutor, please refer your student to ALC Tutoring Services. Tutors are paid by the hour on a bi-weekly basis via the KU payroll automatic deposit process.
